Pentecost Message.

Dear friends.
On Pentecost Sunday I took a Church Anniversary service at a small village church; but what I didn’t know until six days before, was that it was to be the last Anniversary in their 129-year-old chapel. A great deal of money was needed to repair and keep it warm. Soon they are going to hold their Sunday worship in the village hall.
The congregation were very sad about this change. They felt they were going through a time of great uncertainty; but at least they recognised that a church is more than a building, and needs to adapt itself to changing situations.
I wonder whether we realise however, that the Holy Spirit often does his greatest work through us all when we are going through times of uncertainty?
William Cowper, in one verse of his hymn ‘God moves in mysterious way’ wrote :-
‘Ye fearful saints fresh courage take,
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.’

It is believed to be the last hymn that Cowper wrote. He suffered from depression for most of his life, but when he composed these words, he was saying something very important. He dared to believe that God through His Spirit, can bring blessings even through difficult times.
This is an aspect of prayer that none of us must overlook. It is all part of what someone recently described as the ‘spirituality’ of trusting.
May we all learn ‘to trust and not be afraid’, live out our lives by faith, and see how God frequently is leading us through our dilemmas, worries and challenges.
Every ‘blessing’,

PS. On the 28th of this month, I’m due to go to Queens hospital, Nottingham for Colon surgery. The prognosis is fairly encouraging, but Pauline and I would value your prayers at this time. D.
